For years, I thought loving myself meant I was being prideful.
As a Christian woman, I genuinely wanted to please God. I wanted to walk in humility. So I did what I thought was right—I shrank. I silenced my gifts. I rejected compliments. I talked down to myself because I thought that made me more holy.
But one day, God checked me.

He gently reminded me that humility isn’t about hating yourself—it’s about seeing yourself clearly through His eyes, not your insecurities.
When Humility Becomes Self-Rejection
If you’ve ever told yourself things like:
-
“I don’t deserve anything good.”
-
“I’m not worthy of love.”
-
“I’m just a mess, and that’s how I’ll always be.”
…then sis, that’s not humility. That’s self-rejection—and it’s not from God.
God never asked us to hate what He made. In fact, Genesis 1:27 says we’re made in His image. Ephesians 2:10 calls us His masterpiece. And Psalm 139 says we’re fearfully and wonderfully made.
So when we constantly criticize and reject ourselves, we’re not walking in humility—we’re dishonoring His work.
What Real, Godly Self-Love Looks Like
Loving yourself the right way doesn’t mean being self-centered.

It means:
-
Believing what God says about you
-
Forgiving yourself like He forgave you
-
Taking care of your body and mind as His temple
-
Speaking life instead of death over your identity
-
Refusing to let shame define you
This kind of self-love doesn’t elevate you above God—it aligns your heart with Him.
My Journey Toward Healthy, Holy Confidence
Once I started spending more intentional time with God, especially during my devotion time, something shifted. I stopped asking, “Is it okay to love myself?” and started asking, “God, teach me how You love me—so I can reflect that.”
And girl, let me tell you…
When you start choosing Him every day, He’ll show you who you are. Not what the world calls you. Not what your past says. Not what your doubts scream.
But who He created you to be: loved, called, chosen, and worthy.
How to Start Loving Yourself God’s Way
Here are a few things that helped me reset my mindset:
- Start your day with affirmations rooted in Scripture
(“I am God’s masterpiece.” “I am forgiven.” “I am deeply loved.”)
- Catch and correct your self-talk.
Stop saying things God never said about you. Replace “I’m a mess” with “I’m in progress.”
- Spend time in His Word daily.
He’ll remind you of your identity when the world tries to make you forget. This Is the new Spiral Bible that I like.
- Get in community with people who reflect your worth.
Surround yourself with those who call out the gold in you, not the dirt.
